Speakers:
1. Reducing the "Heat Island Effect" with Cool Roofs
GRCC volunteer Alex Cannara showed us how dark roofs add heat to the atmosphere and illustrated how light colored roofs reduce that heat. Take a look at his handout for more details.
Alex has a background in engineering, statistics, and education and is a member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
2. Zero Net Energy Buildings and an Update on California Green Building News
GRCC Volunteer Nils Davis described how buildings can have zero net energy usage. By discussing the "passive house" movement that started in Europe and is gaining momentum here in the States, he shows changes we can make to increase energy efficiency. Review Nils handout for more information on building initiatives.
Nils is a product manager at a software company, but as an GRCC volunteer, is focused on green building, zero-net energy homes and the associated technologies, practices, and policies.
